About EVOLVE WOODWORKS
The Beginning
My name is Joel and I am the owner of Evolve Woodworks. I have had a love for wood for as long as I can remember. Woodworking was one of my favourite subjects at school, however at the time, my heart had taken me in a different direction; teaching. I spent almost 10 years teaching HPE, Social Sciences and Manual Arts, however recently I decided that my heart had taken me in a different direction again - back to wood. It all started when I had some of my own logs that I wanted to do something with, but didn't know where to begin. Until I googled mobile sawmilling.
The Process
I contacted a sawyer in the area and booked him in to come and mill my logs. Watching the crane lift the logs onto the bed of the mill was pretty cool, but the amazement really started when the first cuts were made. The picture to the right is one of the first Ironbark logs that were cut and I was in complete awe of the beauty of the wood grain inside. I couldn't believe how the dark, grey, harsh Ironbark tree could produce something so incredible. I fell in love. Each new cut, painted a completely different picture than the last and my head filled with endless possibilities.
My Evolution
After watching the process for two days, I asked myself "Where to from here?" I decided to leave teaching and pursue my passion for working with wood by running my own mobile sawmilling and woodworking business - Evolve Woodworks - a metaphor for my personal journey and reflection of the process of transforming logs into usable timber. Now my dream is to help everyone share what I experienced, turning laying logs into wooden wonders.
In addition to the mobile milling service, I am also working to build and equip a workshop with woodworking machines: Slabmaster, thicknesser, jointer. I will be able to help you dress your timber ready for use.
There is a lot of beauty in old grey logs, you just have to know where to search and what to use to find it.
